The Lion - Boreham - Chelmsford

The Lion Chronicles

  • About The Lion Inn

The history of The Lion extends back to 1495, during the reign of Henry VII, when the building was a thatched farmhouse part of a considerable landed estate. In 1578, farmer and hop grower, Septimus Mallet, registered the property as an alehouse with a licence to sell ales & ciders. Just a few years later, Septimus obtained a licence to sell distilled gins & spirits, naming the building The Red Lion. During the 18th century, The Red Lion expanded to provide food and shelter to weary travellers, particularly stage and mail coaches who would stop enroute from Colchester to London. With roots deep in history, we are proud to continue this tradition today!

    In more recent times…

The Red Lion was purchased by a local entrepreneur, Spin Thomson, who fully refurbished the original building and expanded the site. In October 2008, The Lion Inn was born.  The new building boasted 15 boutique guest rooms, an impressive American style bar, and a charming private dining room. The beginning of 2015 saw the opening of the latest edition, The Lion House.  A beautifully presented function venue, catering for weddings, parties and corporate events, the light, airy and versatile space makes it the perfect venue for any occasion. An additional 8 rooms were built with the venue, all designed with the same distinguished décor that our customers know and recognise as that signature Lion style.

In 2021, The Lion was purchased by RedCat Pub Company. Now the fastest growing pub company in the UK, The Lion was the first acquisition by this new and exciting company.  Whilst the parent ownership may have changed, The Lion still retains the same unique character, with quality food and exemplary customer service at the heart of what we do. Many of our senior team have been part of the business since 2008, and are all committed to maintaining the true Lion ethos.
